Ankle

Ankle sprains, fractures, instability, and tendon problems treated by our foot and ankle team, with on-site X-ray and custom bracing available.

Our specialty-trained doctors evaluate, diagnose, and treat the full range of ankle conditions and injuries — always starting with the most conservative effective option, and offering advanced surgical care when it's needed.

Care is available at both our Torrington and Bristol offices, with on-site X-ray, physical and occupational therapy, and many procedures performed at the Litchfield Hills Surgery Center.

Common conditions we treat

  • Ankle sprains — stretched or torn ligaments — the most common sports injury, and one that's often undertreated
  • Ankle fractures — breaks of one or more ankle bones, from simple to complex
  • Chronic ankle instability — repeated giving-way after incompletely healed sprains
  • Achilles tendon problems — tendinitis and ruptures of the body's largest tendon
  • Ankle arthritis — cartilage wear, often years after a fracture

How we treat them

Treatment always starts with the most conservative effective option. Depending on your condition, your plan may include:

  • Structured rehabilitation — the key to preventing re-sprains
  • Bracing and custom orthotics managed on site
  • Fracture care from casting through surgical fixation
  • Arthroscopic and reconstructive ankle surgery, including complex trauma

When to see a doctor

An ankle you can't bear weight on needs an X-ray. Sprains that remain swollen or unstable after two weeks, repeated rolling of the same ankle, or pain along the Achilles with push-off should all be evaluated.
